Does anyone know what Dagwood Bumstead does for a living? I am having an
argument with a friend as to whether he is a lawyer or works in
advertising.
Answer:
Dagwood works diligently at sleeping, making necklaces
out of paper clips, and paper hats out of newspaper.
However... what he's paid to do is work at Dithers'
construction company.
Any reference to their profession is usually in the form of
contracts only, e.g. the "Bidwell contract" or
"McGillicuddy contract" and so on.
I don't recall that J.C. Dithers was a construction company, but Mr.
Dithers once introduced Dagwood as "our office manager." Dagwood also
seems to have gotten his own office, with his name on the door.
I rather miss the old-fashioned bus with its conductor. It doesn't quite
seem right for Dag to drive a car, however occasionally he does so.
Blondie's catering van seems quite in character, however.
I'm not sure Dithers was ever mentioned to be a construction company in the
strip, but I think it may have been referred to as such in the movie
series.
