Question:
they gotta pay pretty well.
anybody know anything?
serious question
Answer:
thinking about it.
business is a bit slow here, and the guy that manages the shop can do
it by himself, and would be happy to, if I gave him a big chunk of the
profits. Free me up to take a year off to pull down some serious dough
over there.
But it would have to be serious dough.
What kind of *job* did you have in mind, BTW. Oil Field Work?
Nah. More like a foreman's job. I own a commercial cabinet shop. Do
custom office furnishings, high-end store fixtures, etc. If they
actually go ahead with this "rebuilding" of Iraq,, they'll need fancy
offices for the big shot exec duff-fluffers that get stuck with living
there, and massive residential remodeling, store fixturing, etc.
Figure there might be a need for people to manage the Paki, East
Indian and Arab woodworkers they're bound to round up to get it done,
who aren't spooked too much by the possibility of getting blown to
bits.
Avoid the latter, and the former shouldn't be too hard. They're damned
good woodworkers. Not as good as Japs or Europeans, but they work a
lot cheaper.
Most of the reconstruction work is going to subs that are in the UAE
or other gulf states, run by ex-military folks. Some are even going
to Iraqi's.
They are not hiring labor, even specialized construction labor out of
the states. Zip, nada.
Food, logistics, materials.. everything is going through the good old
boy network in the gulf. Mostly headed by ex-military and employing
foreign nationals.
Only thing that's high paid and hiring from the US are law enforcement
trainers, force protection, bomb dogs, electronics and communications
infrastructure, and oil field engineers.
Everything else is sourced in the gulf.
You are NOT going to get a highly paid job as a construction foreman
or even a skilled construction laborer.
