Question:
I have a nice hard hat with a screen visor I wear when I use my chain
saw. But the liner -- the sweatband and web that sits on your head and
holds the hat slightly away from your head -- has partly separated
from the hat. The reason is that two of the little nylon clips (I
assume they are nylon) that slide into pockets in the hat and hold the
liner to the hard part of the hat have cracked and the liner slides
out.
Are these replaceable? Or can you put in an entire new liner? If so,
where do you buy the darned things? If not, anyone have suggestions on
how to fix this some other way? The way they are constructed it looks
like they are meant to be replaceable.
I tried to glue one of the nylon clips, but gluing nylon seems to be
impossible.
Answer:
Yes, they are replaceable. If you can't find one at your local hardware
store, I'd suggest a more contractor-oriented place. Around here, it'd be
Graingers. They also sell by mail, so you could probably get it from them
if you don't have anything local.
Ouch. High tuition for that bit of schooling! I bought the helmet
originally because it had this handy pull-down screen visor that kept
all the flying sawdust out of my eyes and because it had "built-in"
earmuff noise protectors. Looks pretty dorky, I confess.
Then I noticed one day that a branch I had cut with a pole trimmer --
just like you did -- fell down and made quite a big impression on my
lawn. It poked a hole a couple of inches deep in the soil. I got to
thinking what my head would look like with a branch growing out of it.
Decided that I would be more conscientious about wearing the dorky
hat.
But back to my original question. Now listen you guys/gals, I need a
source for a new hard hat liner/webbing. Now I know they are made, but
where to find one. Local "we-got-everything" hardware place looked it
up in their supplier catalogs but no luck. How about it? Who stocks
these things?
How about a place that sells more than just an occasional chain saw, like all
kinds of equipment for working in the woods? Skidders, backhoes and dozer
types. Start with the yellow pages and call asking for a hard hat rather than
a liner because there are many different manufacturers of hats and they all
use different attachment points and styles of liners. And when you find a hat
buy an extra liner!
I used to have one like you described; until I was cutting grass with my
tractor and didn't keep my eye on the branch ahead of me. The branch hit my
helmet, the helmet flew off, and landed right in the shredded. At least it
cushioned my head first.
Here's a web address where you can order 4 point and 6 point liners.
