Question:
So going back to the "snowshoeing newbie" thread - I still haven't
gone out and romped in the snow due to illness hitting me right
when my vacation time started (I hate that).
There were several recommendations that I would need some sort
of insulated snow boot. Right now I can't justify it since I'm
already having a hard time storing the shoes I have now. However -
it seems that the secret to most of these snow boots is a liner
material that might be a blend of wool/olefin/polyester/nylon. I've
seen a variety of cold-weather socks, and I'm thinking it might
work well with a leather Gore-Tex lined boot. I did a search of
previous posts, and didn't really find anything recent that addresses
this problem. Someone did mention a "vapor barrier sock" in that
previous thread.
Answer:
I guess my deal here is that I'm getting so many different
recommendations. I'll just try the two thin liners and a wool
sock. I should be fine once I get moving and the blood is
flowing. I hope. ;-)
Worst case would be I find it doesn't work and I go and buy
the insulated liner or boot in the future.
As a xc skier which gets cold hands/feet easily I have struggled for a
long time to find what works.
1) Keeping dry is essential, but feet perspire a lot!
2) Liner socks must be wicking! Never cotton!
3) Smartwool is good stuff and works well.
4) A wicking liner and smartwool oversock work well.
5) Deals can be had on socks and boots at www.sportsmansguide.com and
www. sierratradingpost.com
6) I have a pair of Techspun sock/liner ( http://www.techspun.com/ )
and they work best of all if you don't mind a bit of bulk. I have a pair
of insulated boots that is a size too big, for when I need to stand
around, and they work great in these.
