Question:
Does anyone have any data about the receiver in the Venture? JoeM's site discourages
other Etrex models but doesn't mention this one.
Given that it's WAAS enabled, is it as good as any other internal antenna units?
Answer:
That's what I'm using with my SporTrak. The extra wires, the battery,
and the hard hat to mount the antenna on (velcro) are a bit of a hassle,
but you get used to them. I guess it's a question of whether you really
want/need the extra accuracy provided by the WAAS satellite.
Any chance of posting some details of what you are using for the
reradiating antenna, the sort of improvement you get, and the
configuration? I am considering something along those lines as my
Venture loses signal too easily when bush walking.
I've been hiking many weekends since January with a Venture in my left
hand, a GPS 76 in my right hand, and a 12XL in my pocket connected to
an external antenna on top of my hat. I plan on posting some samples.
I've also done a nearby loop hike (Waldo Canyon) about 6 times with
the above combination plus 2 times with the GPS76 connected to the
external antenna and the 12XL in my right hand. I've taken pictures
to show the terrain and location of some of the waypoints. I did the
Waldo Canyon series this past winter and early spring and wanted to
get some summer hikes in plus more with the GPS76 connected to an
external antenna before posting any results. Eventually I will get
more data and post the results - not necessarily in that order.
Last fall I posted a few samples from when I had just the Venture and
12XL at:
