Big, clunky work-boots ?

Question:
I've been thinking about getting some big, clunky work-boots to wear to (white-collar) work and to school. Does anybody have any suggestions on the best brand and style to get for around $100 or so? And what's the best color, black or brown? (I'm looking more for style than for utilitarianism.)

Answer:
If you have a Gap shoe store near you, they make cool clunky boots. I think I paid less than $100. Also, I've seen some cool ones at Eddie Bauer...You might also check Sears (believe it or not). They sell all kinds of "construction worker-type" boots and they're cheap too!

FILA makes some cool work boots. I have two 8" pairs, black and green. The black look great with anything, suits (believe it or not) to hip-hop. They were selling for $120 when I got mine, but they're about $90 now here in Michigan.

Doc Martens will be the best; the plain black leather eight-eyelet style has become acceptable for wear in nearly all settings. The Fluevog commando boot is a little tougher looking and therefore a little hipper right now, and Fluevog shoes are excellent quality. DMs have been hip for ten or twelve years now, though, so you will look cool but less trendy if you go for the typical DM boot rather than the Fluevog

Timberlands used to be the coolest thing to buy, for quite a while, until lots of rip-off versions of the most popular style came out. Caterpillar is the really hip brand at the moment, and are rather cheaper than Timberland as well (75-80 quid, compared with 110-130 quid for Timberlands, at tradionally inflated UK prices.)
