Work Boot Brands,?

Question:
I'm a newbie and need advice. I've been doing day backpack hikes in the Smokey Mountains, and until now have just used old running shoes. I find I slip a lot, especially on rocks, also I'd sure like some ankle support. I was considering buying a pair of Vasque Clarion GTX boots.

Any feedback on these? Is there something else I should consider?

Answer:
However, the most important thing is buying boots which fit YOUR feet well. You need to try on different brands and models to find one that is right. The best boot in the world is no good if it doesn't fit right.

For your first pair of boots, I would recommend that you go to an outdoor specialty retailer and work with an experienced bootfitter.

You might wish to Google this website and my posting name with the words "boots" and "fitting". I have posted a few times with a procedure for fitting boots which may be helpful.

I don't get it myself...... seems like good boots are pretty waterproof without it, at least for a brief dunking; and if you get in over the boot top you're screwed anyhow. And in the desert it seems like the added weight and heat for nothing. Maybe somebody with a lot of wet experience will have a comment.

I didn't know they were still in business. There are one or two companies who will make custom ski boots for you via mail. Dale boots is one, but these are plastic contraptions for a specific purpose. I should think you would get good service for hiking boots.

What is Your answer?
